Between birth and death one receives a physical form. This form is universally recognized as a human figure. No matter how many differences are drawn between people, the form and the limitation of physical existence still fundamentally unite humanity. The three paintings contemplate the uniqueness of human form and its relation to the world surrounding it, the impermanence of biological existence, the uniting quality of bodily form and the extremes of existence, such as creation and mortality, all of which can be applied to any human being, regardless of race and gender. People depicted - Ville, Robby, Milica, Michael, Tove, Tom - are all coming from a variety of socially constructed groups, divided by race, gender, sexual identity and nationality. However, the baptismal white sheet becomes a vehicle to visually and spiritually unify the various pairings of bodies, reflecting on the continuum and universality of the human existence. |
